What does it require to be safe and comfortable?

Dental cleaning, or prophylaxis, is a relatively common procedure that has been performed by veterinarians for decades. Although the fundamental aspect of the procedure (cleaning the teeth) has changed little over the years, the process of anesthetic safety, diagnostics (dental x-rays), equipment (ultrasonic scalers and high speed drills), and pain relief have continuously improved over the last two decades. Unfortunately, sometimes progress is slow and improvements are not added automatically but instead considered “elective”. When evaluating the cost of having a dental cleaning, it is important to recognize that some hospitals break cost down into the procedure itself with additional charges if you elect to have pre-anesthetic blood work, intravenous fluids, dental x-rays, extractions, or even pain medication.

Pikesville Animal Hospital is committed to performing dental cleanings in the safest and most comfortable manner possible using the most up-to-date techniques. Because of this, we package all of the services needed to provide such care. All dental packages are complete and include:

Pre anesthetic examination by a doctor
Pre anesthetic blood evaluation to be sure no major problems are present
General anesthesia: all pre medication, induction, and inhaled anesthetics as determined by a doctor
Anesthetic Monitoring: advanced equipment to monitor blood pressure, blood oxygenation, heart rhythm, and other parameters as well as a nurse manually assessing similar parameters throughout the procedure
Intravenous catheter and fluids to help improve safety and recovery from anesthesia
Pain medication immediately after surgery as well as in the subsequent days
Constant, trained nursing care and monitoring from start to end
Dental x-rays as needed after doctor evaluation
Dental extractions as determined to be needed by a doctor
Pain medication immediately after surgery as well as in the subsequent days
Antibiotics prior to the proceedure and in the subsequent days

Because Pikesville Animal Hospital believes this is how pets should be cared for, we do not make you choose “yes” or “no” to the above options. Instead we have combined all of these services into a single package and have made the price as affordable as possible. We are happy to provide clients (and patients) with a tour of our hospital to see where and how your pet will be cared for. As stated above, packages are all inclusive so that your pet will receive the best care as determined by a doctor. Because prices are determined by the severity of dental disease present, an examination is required prior to providing an estimate. We strive to keep the process as simple and affordable as possible without sacrificing quality of care.
